Atchison ready for Cayuga today
CAYUGA -- Rob Atchison made more money playing cards yesterday than he earned on the race track.
He hopes to cash in on the quarter-mile dragstrip today when the IHRA Canadian Nationals resume at Toronto Motorsports Park.
Rain forced postponement of yesterday's eliminations, which begin today at 10 a.m., with the finals at 2 p.m.
This is the eighth of 11 events in the Knoll-Gas Motorsports Drag Racing Series and Atchison, second in alcohol funny car points, is the No. 1 qualifier after a run of 5.784 seconds (239.27 m.p.h.) on Saturday night.
Racing, like most other outdoor sports, is at the mercy of the weather. Atchison was happy when the postponement came at 3:30 p.m.
"I like to be in a rhythm. This long delay broke that rhythm," he said. "It's nice to be able to wake up and see what the day is going to be like and see what preparation and changes you've got to make."
Atchison has drawn points leader and defending champion Mark Thomas of Louisville, Ohio in the first round. A win is crucial for Atchison to have any chance at catching Thomas.
Atchison, who won three straight championships beginning in 2004, trails Thomas by 77 points with three events after this -- in Milan, Mich., Budds Creek, Md., and Rockingham, N.C.
